I had personally experienced sexual harassment repeatedly starting as early as 1956. I had never discussed any of my sexual harassment experiences because nobody wanted to hear about them. When a person broached the subject, people clammed up and afterwards, avoided you, so I just lived with a myriad of sexual harassment experiences. Then Anita Hill testified before a Congressional committee about the sexual harassment when she worked at the EEOC for Clarence Thomas, who was then being considered for a spot on the Supreme Court, which he of course got, much as Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California even though a number of women claimed to have been sexually harassed by him. It is an indication of just how lightly sexual harassment is regarded by the public. I was so inspired, that I wanted to start a support group for victims of sexual harassment, and I chose the name, “Women Against Sexual Harassment.” I believe this was in 1991. I even held one meeting in Sioux Falls to try to do so. I was startled to have some of the women who attended say that there was no need for such an organization in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, there was simply no sexual harassment here, which is total bull. I had more problems with it here than I did in California. I always had a job in California, some of them paid quite well and had quite a bit of responsibility, but not in Sioux Falls. In Sioux Falls, I concluded, you had to provide sex for employers to get and keep jobs. One woman even said that there might be a need for such an organization, but it should not be run by anyone who had been a victim of sexual harassment!!!
